Betsy Priem
Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology, University of Chicago

About Me
My research interests focus on how society organizes its environmental hazards and responds to those risks. For my dissertation, I compare how four U.S. coastal cities are developing adaptation policies to address sea level rise. My qualitative approach combines ethnographic, archival, and comparative methods to examine how cities facing similar environmental threats are managing the changing realities of their built environments. This work has been generously supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute for Social Sciences, and the University of Chicago's Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization (CEGU) and Department of Sociology.

Research interests
Climate change, climate adaptation, environmental sociology, political sociology, urban governance, mixed methods
